Why overseed your lawn in Toronto?

Overseeding your lawn, the process of sowing additional grass seeds over your existing turf, provides several benefits that contribute to a healthier and more resilient lawn. Let's break down the reasons why overseeding is beneficial:

  1. Increases Natural Weed and Crabgrass Resistance: A thicker lawn can naturally suppress weeds and crabgrass by limiting the amount of sunlight that reaches the soil surface, making it harder for these unwanted plants to germinate and grow. When your lawn is dense and lush, there's less room for weeds to establish themselves.

  2. Creates a More Insect and Disease-Resistant Lawn: By integrating stronger cultivars of grass—varieties that have been biologically enhanced with endophytes (beneficial fungi that live within the grass plants) and have stronger growing characteristics adapted to local weather conditions—you're essentially upgrading your lawn. These improved grass types are more resilient against pests and diseases, thereby reducing the need for chemical treatments.

  3. Helps Reduce Previous Damage and Small Bare Spots: Overseeding is an effective way to repair minor damage to your lawn, such as thinning areas or small bare patches. By adding new grass seeds, you encourage fuller growth, which helps to naturally repair these areas over time.

  4. Results in a Greener, Thicker, Healthier Lawn With Fewer Weeds: Ultimately, the goal of overseeding is to cultivate a lush, thick, vibrant lawn. A denser lawn not only looks better but is also healthier. It can better withstand the stresses of weather, foot traffic, and pests. With a robust lawn, you'll notice a reduction in weeds, as the dense turf outcompetes them for resources such as light, water, and nutrients.

In summary, overseeding is a proactive maintenance strategy that enhances the health, appearance, and durability of your lawn. It is an environmentally friendly way to maintain a beautiful lawn, reducing the need for chemical treatments and water usage over time.

OUR OVERSEEDING APPLICATION:

  • OVERSEEDING

3-IN-1 GRASS SEED & FEED

Everyone wants a thick and healthy lawn. Overseeding is the practice of adding new grass seed into a lawn.

Is your lawn looking thin and brown?

Your lawn may over time start to show signs of wear and age. Overseeding helps restore the overall density of your lawn, as well as helping to fill in sparse areas, keeping your yard looking its best. New grass seed assists in thickening up these areas before they continue to worsen and problems arise. Overseeding incorporates advanced grass varieties enhanced with endophytes, reducing the need for water and fertilizer, bolstering resistance against insects and diseases, and naturally deterring weeds.

Our overseeding treatment not only includes the application of a layer of new grass seeds, but also contains:

  • Organic, weed-free granular topdressing.

  • Nutrient-rich starter fertilizer.

This premium blend of fully certified grass seed, topdressing and fertilizer is expertly combined to rejuvenate depleted soils and enhance turf density, revive worn spots and ensuring lush, vibrant growth all in one step.

How is it applied?

  1. Lawn Mowing: Before overseeding, we'll need to cut your grass a little shorter than normal and bag the clippings.

  2. Raking the lawn: We'll rake the entire lawn to help loosen the top layer of soil and remove any dead grass and debris. This will give the grass seed easy access to the soil so it can root more easily after germinating.

  3. 3-IN-1 blend application: Our premium grass seed and feed blend is then carefully spread and evenly applied across the lawn, delivering the required amount of nutrients, grass seed and fertilizer to meet the lawns requirements and ensure it grows healthy.

Watering after overseeding  is critical for the first 7 to 10 days; this will help the root systems to become established. Watering instructions will be provided.  Maintaining a light frequent watering schedule multiple times a day until the grass fully establishes is vital to ensure the seed stays moist and doesn’t dry out.

When Is the Best Time to Over-Seed?

Spring and Fall are usually the best times to overseed, since soil and air temperatures are warm and natural rainfall is common. These conditions greatly enhance seed germination and significantly improve the chances of successful establishment.

OPTIONAL ADD-ONS

Select an optional add-on to add to the standard service:

  • Power Raking

Power Raking of the lawn

The necessity of power raking/dethatching the lawn before the overseeding process vary from yard to yard.
However, we typically recommend it because thatch can accumulate and create a thick barrier, inhibiting grass seed from properly contacting the soil and affecting germination. Incorporating power raking into our overseeding process significantly enhances seed germination and greatly improves the likelihood of successful new lawn establishment.

Power raking a lawn before overseeding is an important step in lawn maintenance for several reasons. This process, also known as dethatching, involves using a machine to remove the thick layer of thatch that can build up on a lawn's surface. Thatch is a layer of dead and living grass shoots, stems, and roots that accumulates between the soil surface and the green vegetation. Here's why power raking before overseeding is crucial:

  1. Improves Seed-to-Soil Contact: One of the primary benefits of power raking is that it helps ensure better seed-to-soil contact, which is essential for the germination of new grass seeds. If seeds are sown on top of a thick layer of thatch, they may not be able to reach the soil effectively, resulting in poor germination and uneven grass growth.

  2. Enhances Water, Nutrient, and Oxygen Absorption: Thatch can act as a barrier to water, nutrients, and air, preventing these essential elements from reaching the soil and the roots of the grass. By removing thatch, you allow water, nutrients, and oxygen to penetrate the soil more effectively, creating a healthier environment for new and existing grass to thrive.

  3. Reduces Pest and Disease Risk: A thick thatch layer can harbor pests and diseases, creating an unhealthy environment for your lawn. Power raking helps to remove this habitat, reducing the risk of pest infestations and disease outbreaks in your lawn.

  4. Promotes a Healthier Lawn Root System: By improving the overall health of the lawn through better nutrient, water, and air availability, power raking encourages the development of a stronger, more vigorous root system. A healthy root system is essential for the growth of a lush, dense lawn.

  5. Prepares the Lawn for Overseeding: Power raking is a preparatory step that creates a more suitable environment for overseeding. By removing thatch and loosening the soil surface, it ensures that new seeds have a better chance of germinating and establishing themselves, leading to a thicker, more robust lawn.

In summary, power raking before overseeding is a critical maintenance activity that prepares the lawn for optimal seed germination and growth. It creates a healthier environment for new grass by ensuring better seed-to-soil contact, improving the absorption of water, nutrients, and air, reducing pest and disease risks, and promoting a healthier root system. This preparation step is key to achieving the benefits of overseeding, such as increased density and resilience of the lawn.
